Understanding Digitalization: Metaverse, Web3, and More

Quantum computers, cryptocurrencies, chatbots—digitalization comes with a growing list of technical terms. However, many people struggle to keep up with this expanding vocabulary. In Germany, 75% of the population has never heard of the Metaverse. While 15% recognize the term, only 4% feel confident enough to explain it.

Even Web3 and blockchain remain a mystery to many. Only 2% can define Web3, and just 13% feel capable of explaining blockchain. In contrast, cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) are more widely understood, with 55% and 52% of people, respectively, able to explain these concepts. These findings come from a representative survey conducted for the third National Digital Day, as reported by the “Digital for All” initiative.

Bringing Digitalization to Everyone

“The Metaverse is still unfamiliar to many. To make digitalization buzzwords accessible to everyone, we created National Digital Day—an event that allows people to discover and experience digitalization in an easy-to-understand way,” says Anna-Lena Hosenfeld, Managing Director of “Digital for All.” This initiative unites 28 organizations from civil society, culture, science, business, welfare, and the public sector to promote digital inclusion in Germany.

Explore the Metaverse on National Digital Day

On June 24, National Digital Day will showcase various aspects of digitalization through workshops and training sessions. Among the 1,000+ registered events, several will focus on the Metaverse:

  • Open Interaction Design Lab | HAWK University of Applied Sciences and Arts: This lab invites participants to explore virtual and augmented reality technology. A lecture will also cover the Metaverse in Web3.
  • Live Webinar – “Demystifying the Metaverse: A Brief Overview” | Bitkom Academy: This online seminar will discuss whether the Metaverse is an open space or controlled by corporations, its current applications, and the role of NFTs.
  • From Augmented Reality to the Metaverse – Corporate XR-Lab | KölnBusiness: This event will explore the differences between Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR) through hands-on experiences.
  • Web3 & Metaverse – An Introductory Lesson | Kaiserslautern Technical University: This keynote speech will examine how Web3 and the Metaverse integrate the virtual, augmented, and physical worlds while introducing new user interaction possibilities.
